Monotypes
How The Monotype Is Done...

A Monotype is an image that is painted directly onto a plate, which could be either zinc, copper, or plexiglass. The painting is transferred to damp paper by either rubbing, or by running it through an etching press just as you would run an etching. The Monotype contains no repeatable image that was etched onto the plate, therefore, the completed Monotype is considered to be completely original as is an original painting.
This differs from a Monoprint. A Monoprint contains a repeatable image that has been etched into the plate so that a series of like monoprints can be produced. They are all derived from the same plate, then they are hand manipulated by either painting, drawing, etc. and are signed and numbered as a "unique" edition.
